The 2008 Journey
Highlights of the day
Off we go with our cast of characters plus one. The plan of riding 100 miles and stopping for gas and a rest break worked out well. But we made 4 stops in the first 30 miles. First stop was because Shirley couldn't shift. The second was because it looked like rain, but we still went on without rain gear. The next stop was due to this huge cloud. It must have been 1000 feet wide, moving southwest. This cloud was like something out of a sci-fi movie, really eerie. So we stopped and put on rain gear. Ricky even flashed Allen his bungee corded banana suit. Here we go again and at this stopping rate, we'll get there tomorrow. The next stop was Dennis. Just out of the blue he cuts off the road, gets off his bike and is holding his head. He said something hit him in the head and he felt like he had been shot. He even had cut just above his ear but he didn't see it coming or even what it was.
Finally, about 1pm we rolled into the cabin. We had just finished unpacking the bikes when Dion, Glenn, and Jill rolled in. We had found the key and were going about finding each of our rooms. Ricky's was not hard to find as there was a box of Trix cereal set on his pillow. You could say that Glenn knows him pretty well.
Dennis, Dion, Roy, Glenn and Jill all went down to Keystone to see Rushmore. Everyone has been saying how Roy aka "Preacher Pete" is so lucky, but he wasn't so lucky today as they three of them came back with parking tickets from the Keystone Cops for parking in a "Yellow Zone". But having him along, the bikes have been behaving themselves. In one of the rooms was another orange envelope from the previous guest in the lodge. They got a parking ticket too but they didn't pay it obviously.
Allen, Ricky, and I rode down to the grocery store to get some things for dinner and breakfast. When we got to the bikes with the groceries, we found that once again my saddlebags were starting to split. So getting my gear home without it spilling out on the highway is going to be tricky. Thank God Ricky has Duct Tape.
After we were all back at the lodge we all went about doing out own stuff. Ricky started doing what he does best. He had my son get him a roll of caution tape. Of course all he could get was precaution tape written in Spanish. But several years ago when Dennis came down he was getting ready to leave my house to go back to Atlanta. Getting around my sand driveway proved more than the Bullet could handle. All Allen and I saw was a headlight beam pointing straight up in the sky. Well we got the bike back up and pushed it up into the back of his pickup truck. Then Dennis got the great idea to move the truck. Did he tie down the bike? Nope, Boom! over it went again putting a dent in the gas tank. So now, when we see Dennis, no one wants to park next to him. While Dennis was in the house doing his thing, Ricky set up chairs and barricaded it with caution tape. We were all rolling when Dennis came out wondering what all the commotion was about.
