Today's Route
Today we are going to:
Highlights of the day
Today we're heading into Sturgis. Glenn and Jill decided to go tour some caves. So the rest of us are going to Sturgis. Dennis, Dion, and Roy have to go to Keystone first to pay their parking tickets so they will meet up with us later in Sturgis. Allen, Ricky and I set off towards Deadwood. At the first gas station we had to add more clothes as it is pretty cold up here. It drops into the 50's and 60's when the sun goes down.
Ricky had some shifting problems coming through Deadwood so we are going to have to address that issue pretty quick. We made it to J&P Cycles after about an hour on the road. Allen bought some more parts for Shirley. He is also having problems with the rocker boxes on the bike. He had them rebuilt before he left but the mechanic didn't torque it down properly so now the bike has a new last name. "Shirley Valdez" as in the oil slick.
The other three finally showed up at J&P Cycles and we decided to get something to eat. Allen passed a sunglass shop, but like a rubber band, it pulled him back. I don't think I have ever known him NOT to buy a new pair of sunglasses during a Rally. He didn't let me down.
We walked over to One Eyed Jacks to get some lunch. Our waitress was asking if we had seen any corn out in the vendors. Dennis lost it. He said "CORN? You want Corn? There's 863 miles of CORN between here and Atlanta. Don't you ever get out of town? Do you ship it to Russia?" Then he gave his impression of passing corn fields, holding his hands up single file. We were laughing so hard we could hardly contain ourselves. He told the Waitress he was going to bring her an ear of corn if he could find it.
It was going to be a really hot day so we figured we would all do our shopping while we were in Sturgis so that we wouldn't have to make the trip back later for stuff. We all got separated. That's not bad if your cell phones work. Problem is, Ricks, mine, and Phil's don't and we didn't get separated with someone who had a phone. But finally we caught up with Roy and Dennis at the Dungeon Bar. This is where Judy Parker had set up tattoo shop. I told Ricky I wanted one but I didn't know what I wanted. So I made arrangements to see her in Orlando at the Tattoo convention in January 2009 when my friend Lynne comes down for more ink. Judy does the best work.
We decided to head back to the bikes and find the rest of the group. Just as we were walking up the street a fighter jet flew down Main street and kicked in it's jets. The little world of Sturgis froze as if a nuclear bomb had gone off. The American public paid for that waste of fuel.
Dion decided he wanted to go have a drink at the Buffalo Chip to which everyone said OK. But since he had asked for directions, we told him he had to lead. Bad idea. He found it, about 10 miles east of town but it was down a half mile gravel road. When we got there, it was $63. per person just to get in. I don't know about you but that is a pretty expensive beer. We all agreed to go back towards home. Then he wanted to stop at the Full Throttle. He got a group echo of "NO". So we all proceeded back through town. Stop, start, stop, start. Then we broke through all the traffic an headed for home.
We had planned to have an early dinner in Sturgis but it didn't happen. Allen had been wanting a steak dinner and he owed Ricky one for winning the "Name the Geezer bike" contest. So when we got home we found a decent restaurant and made reservations. It was agreed that we were all tired of being on bikes and would take Dion's Mountaineer. We all piled in the truck and drove to the restaurant. While we were there a big thunderstorm went through. Boy were we glad we were in the truck. While we were at the restaurant, Debbie and Greg arrived at the lodge.
