The Journey
Projected weather forecast for today's destination
Highlights of the day
Glenn, Jill, Phil, and Dion decided to take the ride to Devils Tower today with Jerry and Chris. So Dennis, Ricky, myself and the Pinkster all figured we would go south to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer State Park. But the first stop was for Shirley Valdez. So we went down the road to Sic Vic's House of Horsepower. Where at Sic Vic's there motto is "at 200 mph you have no friends..... just balls". Allen got his parts and we were on our way to Keystone for breakfast. When we got to Keystone, we were careful not to park in any Yellow Zones as to avoid ending up like our friends with parking tickets.
Next stop, Mt Rushmore. We headed just a few miles down the road and there it was. We pulled off and snapped some great pictures. Around the bend we could get a profile view so we stopped again.
We proceeded south towards Crazy Horse. I had been there years ago and this monument still wasn't finished so we didn't plan to go in. But I made the turn in and then couldn't turn around so we were obligated to pay the admission to see the attraction. While I was apologizing to Ricky for costing them all money, a fellow said that they were doing a blast in about 20 mintues. So we watched the movie, and they called us to come watch the blast. So we really lucked out.
Now we're going to Custer to see some Buffalo. We went the Wildlife Loop and found one, then one more, then another. Ricky swears they were all mechanical and just their tales twitched. Then we saw some prarie dogs, an antelope and we stopped when we found a wild burro. The burro was licking some sunscreen of this girls arm. Allen is still looking to pet a buffalo. We continued on up the road. All of a sudden, the signs of buffalo were really strong. The road was dirtied and the stench was overpowering. Then we came up over a hill and there they were. Dennis got off his bike to take some pictures. There were two Rangers, one cracking a whip to get the buffalo off the road as they could hurt a biker. The traffic started to move and Ricky and I started to scoot through. Just as two cars got through a big bull turned and charged back toward the road where Ricky was. Must have been that "Kawasaki Purple" that he didn't like. Ricky hit the gas..... I hit the brakes as he stopped dead in front of me. The Ranger snapped the whip again and moved him off the road and the rest of us got through. I think that was enough wildlife for one day .
The next run was Needles Blvd. This is a road cut through the rocks and one of the most scenic rides in the Black Hills. Just then a black storm cloud came up and we all thought we were going to get soaked. We were able to make our way home without getting wet.
When we got home, it was determined that Ricky may have to take his transmission off to get to his shifter that was getting really loose and probably wouldn't make it home. So a call to Sic Vic sent him and Dennis to the shop, where Vic put a new bolt in the shifter and he is now good to go. But he will have to address a repair when he gets home.
